The name “Clergy Emergency League” is inspired by the “Pastor’s Emergency League” that was created in the 1930s by the Confessing Church in Germany, comprised of German Christians who opposed Hitler’s co-opting of Christianity to advance the evil plans of the Third Reich. We slightly altered the original name to be “clergy” so as to be inclusive of different denominations that do not use the term “pastor” for their faith leaders.
Our logo features a simple empty cross indicating the progressive Christian witness and resistance against radical right-wing Christian fundamentalism and nationalism. While we support Christian leaders, we also welcome allies and partnerships with leaders of other faiths. This is especially important as we hold ourselves accountable for discerning how our witness affects other faith communities.
The three verbs at the bottom of the logo represent our commitment to resist oppressive systems that are antithetical to the Christian faith, to reclaim the centrality of the Gospel within the public sphere of Christian witness, and to renew God’s Creation, human communities, and the church with truth, justice, and righteousness.
